So, here we are, one of the first shows of 1978. For those who don't know, the Dead played a couple of shows in the beginning of January with Garcia sitting out vocal duty due to laryngitis. This is his first show back singing.

The energy is high, Garcia has some moments of very sharp, aggressive playing throughout, the band in general is on, Passenger is as good as it gets (just some of the hottest slide playing out of Garcia)...Estimated is great...beyond the focused and fast mutron ideas thrown out by Garcia, Donna actually does some really nice singing at the outro...Garcia's mid-song solo in He's Gone is pure Jerry loopiness, exquisite...Other One bursts forth in a very 1969 sort of way...Franklin's ain't as good as Red Rocks, but this one smokes...this show should be on more folks' 1978 radar...

SET 1: Bertha-> Good Lovin', Brown Eyed Women, Mexicali Blues-> Me & My Uncle, Friend Of The Devil, Cassidy, Candyman, Passenger, Sunrise, Deal-> The Music Never Stopped

SET 2: Jack Straw, It Must Have Been The Roses, Estimated Prophet> He's Gone> Drums> That is it for The Other One> Wharf Rat> Franklin's Tower> Around & Around

Encore: United States Blues

Agree, some cool track on this one.

Jan '78 was wretched at times, but you stumble upon some fine music if you're willing to poke around.

Check out the Let It Grow from the following evening

Very nice. Look forward to hearing the following evening, too. I'm wanting to explore more '78; that's when I saw my first shows, but somehow haven't heard as much from that year.

Any other suggestions come to mind offhand?

Boy , that 's smack dab in an era I do not like . And would get me lit up like a candle if I was a troll about it . The era would be '77 to the fall of '79 . I just do not enjoy the sound . This is not about technical / musical merit . It's me . However , as there always seems to be w/ us as a ' tribe ' there are exceptions .

I love that post drums section

Over @ WV in the stash section , are some Oct. ' from Egypt w/ love ' shows for free download . They are also official GD releases , so it's a bit of a moral sticky wicket . I don't know how that works legally ( good ol' copyright law which I'm learning about ) , but it's there .

Haha I think it's ok that you don't like 77...doesn't bother me any. I love a ton of shows from that era but oddly enough I don't really pull out too much 77-78. On a whim I listened to the jam from 1/10 last night, it'd been quite a while. It's ok, not my favorite of the Jan 78 tour, but it's got it's moments.

A Deadhead who doesn't like '77? Isn't that like being an elf who doesn't like to make toys? Is that, um, allowed? Yup, better keep that quiet, or there soon will emerge some forum version of the elf foreman in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: "Hermey doesn't like to make toys! Micah doesn't like '77!" Off to the Island of Misfit Elves with you .... and no playing any reindeer games, either ......

I'm already on the Island of Misfit Toys . What further place would you exile me to ?
Boy , I bet the people there would be mighty interesting

You cannot stay on the Island of Misfit Toys. That's only for toys -- spotted elephant, charlie-in-the-box, and that rag doll. (What's her issue, anyway?) Hence, the Island of Misfit Elves.

But I'm not an elf or a toy . Ask the big guy in the red suit why I'm here . All I could make out as he muttered under his breath , " Think that you can make a Christmas Jerry ... How dare you wait months and months for something that isn't me .... and then call if better then me .... I'll show these people .... " He had this whole battalion of black booted , red uniformed elves that roughed me up a bit on the way here . I was just giving money to the bell ringing guy outside the store , and the next thing I am being poked to death . Oh , and their nasally voices . Would someone please give them a tissue . Just don't say I told you .
I can't talk to rag doll that much . I've tried and still do . It's just exhausting . Gotta pick the right moment .

Gonna give this one a shot when I have a chance... discovered the fire of the following night during a TDIH this past year. Love listening to a good run... the recordings have a similar acoustic quality, playing, singing, energy is similar over a few nights with all of the songs explored in that way. Good stuff.
